Richard Hynson's composition Evensong serves as the cornerstone for an afternoon of choral music influenced by the long-standing Anglican tradition of celebrating light's victory over darkness.  Other works include Finzi's The Full, Final Sacrifice and Rutter's For the Beauty of the Earth. Stabat Mater

Bel Canto presents Antonín Leopold Dvořák's beautiful and dramatic Stabat Mater, first performed in Prague in December 1880. Today, this major choral-orchestral work is so popular in Dvořák's home country that it is known as "the Czech Messiah." Featuring Bel Canto Chorus with Bel Canto Orchestra. Tickets: $23-$28. Bel Canto Chorus and the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra will present a musical tribute in commemoration of the tenth anniversary September 11, 2001, to honor the victims, civilian heroes, and first responders who put themselves in harm's way to save others; and to create a potent reminder that we are united as Americans.  Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra will perform Samuel Barber's moving "Adagio for Strings," then will be joined by the Bel Canto Chorus and solists for W.A.Mozart's Requiem. Free and open to the public!

Experience the fiery oratory of Frederick Douglass with Kirke Mechem’s Songs of the Slave, and the poignant poetry of Walt Whitman through Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Dona nobis pacem, as these works invite us to reflect on the Civil War and its legacy. 

Featuring Bel Canto Chorus with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (Edo de Waart, Music Director), the Waukesha Choral Union, and the Baptist College of Ministry Concert Chorale.  Conducted by Bel Canto Chorus Music Director Richard Hynson.

The plaintive sounds of Appalachia, and of folksongs and spirituals such as and Down by the Riverside, help to set the stage for the approaching Civil War conflict.  Evoking the echoes of angry abolitionists and heated secessionists alike, Carol Barnett’s Bluegrass Mass reflects the troubled times and brings gentle joy and comfort.

Joseph Baber’s heart-wrenching An American Requiem, op. 80 anchors this commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. Hear the legacy of our country’s pain in letters home, and in poetry and speeches of the times, as our country was torn apart in the epic struggle between north and south.

I Dream of Peace

The Bel Canto Boy Choir, conducted by Ellen Mundy Shuler, and the Vocal Arts Academy, conducted by Emily Holt Crocker, are joined by invited singers from area schools to present the Milwaukee premiere of Robert Jager's powerful I Dream Of Peace, a 20-minute work that paints a haunting picture of war, utilizing texts from children of the Balkans who in the 1990s saw their lives torn apart by war. The children's abhorrence of war creates a deeply moving emotional tapestry rooted in the universal longing for peace. The program also features Srul Irving Glick's uplifting Psalm Trilogy and other works.
